The Chapter 1: Betrayed by Hatty! is one of the 8 Chapters a player can play in the game BattleBlock Theater.

It takes place after the prologue.

Overworld[]

The game's spawn point.

Upon being captured by the Guards, The Player will land in their prison cell for the first time. The cells have screens on them showcasing the player(s)'s unlocked heads and, on Steam, the number of achievements they have.

This is, for the rest of the game, where the player will spawn everytime they open up the campaign. Unlike the rest of the Theater, the condition of the prison cells doesn't change over the course of the game.

Upon going forward and leaving the prison cell, the first Chapter's entrance shows up in what appears to be a very run-down hallway, with vandalized and scratched walls and a floor covered in flung clothes and dirt, all further exposing the old and broken nature of the theater and its lack of care.

The second Chapter's entrance is here too, but can only be unlocked after completing the first Chapter.

The lobby in this Chapter is in poor condition too. Many of the curtains are torn and eaten away, giant clusters of cobwebs are scattered throughout the place, and a giant hole in the wall on the upper floor shows the downpour of rain outside of the theater.

Story[]

The events in this chapter occur right after the S.S. Friendship crashes into a mysterious island in the opening cutscene, and takes place after the prologue, with Hatty becoming haunted by the theater hat after two guards forcibly put it on him, and have the Player and their friends imprisoned.

The Chapter's cutscene opens with the Player being taken in chains by the guards, and the Narrator commenting on it as being "a confusing and hopeless situation"; here the goal is established quickly with the Narrator continuing to say that you need to rescue your friends and get back to your ship, because your friends would do the same for you. He then reflects on Hatty, questioning why he would betray his crew and quickly realizing Hatty's betrayal was induced by the theater hat.

Gameplay[]

Being the first chapter, the stages are very simple, with easy-to-navigate levels and a low amount of enemies.

A large amount of sections in this chapter are used to introduce some new aspects of the game or how to complete the level; the very first level, 1-1, has little to no hazards outside of its water, and the very first Gem is displayed right in front of the player with two arrow signs, very much impossible to miss. It only has three gems and one Yarn; the second level has seven gems and one yarn, showing the player that the gem amount varies per level.

The next few levels focus on making the player familiar with the different basic block types, such as magma blocks, showing the player that they don't do any direct harm, despite their appearance; this is especially apparent in 1-3, where the player has no choice but to progress by going through a tunnel of magma blocks.

Trivia[]

  • All of the Prisoners mentioned in the cutscene that follows Chapter 1, such as Brainne and Gordon, are unlockable in-game.
